I barely started driving was in maybe my second week of driving. Picked up a 44,000-pound load of bleach, sent in my loaded call was driving down the road and feeling rather good. Then two hours down the road I get a message on my little magic box, thinking it was something vital I look for a place to pull off. So just on the fridge of Stockton, I find a little road to pull off on so I intend to find a little pull off the park on the side of the road read the message and get on with my job.  Well after I pull off I can't find a place to pull over, so I continue down the road.


Five miles later I'm driving past fields coming to a bridge near a marina, and now I'm panicking. My GPS tells me to go down a little road, and I pull off only to be in a residential area that doesn't look like it has an outlet. My idea is to turn around and go back the way I came. So a simple U-turn and I'll be out, right?

I pull forward av me start to pull off the maneuver... Now, this is early March, it had been raining and well where I was there was a lot of soaked ground and where I decided to flip my U-turn was right on the nice green saturated ground, so you know what happened.

I had opened enough room to finally turn the most of my tractor bank the way I came and so putting it into second gear I start trying to pull my truck forward.

Nothing

I try again and lay on the gas. My truck is staining and groaning but making no headway. So I get out to see what the issue is. My trailer tires are sunk halfway in the mud, and my tractor is too weighed down to get out of the mud.


Now here comes the bright idea. 


The great idea. The one I think will save me from having to call for assistance.

I check the ground near where my drive tires are. Seems firm and solid, I mean my tractor hasn't sunk at all, so I lower my landing gear, press them firm to the earth checking to see if they drop. They don't, and I'm like "yes this will work" and so I hop back into my truck lower my suspension and start to ease out from under my trailer. About the time I unhook I hear a crash. I get out and look... My landing gear has sunk into the ground, and now I can't get back on my trailer. I stare in horror and can only think. "Fuck."

I call my company and after a brief... A two-hour panic attack, roadside comes out and lift my trailer so I can get back to it and they haul me out along with my heavy load. After that, I drive back the way I came and said, "never again."

Lesson learned. Bright ideas aren't that brilliant in hindsight.

Crazy Trucker Stories

This Is A True Story . . . Once Upon A Time . . . .



Back I guess around August of 07 (not important anyway)I was traveling East on I-40 in Tennessee between Knoxville and Nashville head home to North Carolina. It was a beautiful bright sunny day. . .
I didn't have my CB on which is not unusual, (because I only driver a couple mile over the speed limit unless I am passing someone) There was a four wheeler in the right lane as we topped the hill driving as if she was hauling 40,000 lbs in her car.

I jumped in the left lane to pass her and of course she speeded up. I calmly let her go down the road a little more by now we start going down the hill. When I got back over in the left lane she slowed back down again (All the truckers now exactly what I am talking about!) So instead of risking riding my brakes all the way down this hill, I just jumped right in the left lane.

Important: She had slowed down below the posted 70mpg speed limit by now. I am now only going about 70 and gaining on her when I jumped in the left to pass.

Drivers, what did she do then ?

Of course. She sped back up again. But she only sped up enough to keep me from passing and I wasn't going to go any faster to pass her. (I like keeping myself marketable, no speeding tickets if I can help it.) I wasn't going to slow down and get behind her either. Her pattern indicated that if I did that then she would only slow back down again after seeing a decrease in the threat of the big bad crazy trucker passing her.

We are about half way down the hill at this time and coming on an opening in the woods in middle of the highway where the Troopers cross over. I and the Toyota lady were both traveling about 70 miles and hour (68 - 72 really I had a light load so I didn't have to brake a lot but when I did, she did too).

I noticed everyone ahead tapping their brakes at the point of the opening (I guess its normal for people but I don't get it) That told me automatically that there was a bear in the middle. Of course the lady still in the right lane see that she's coming up on those cars and trucks in the right lane slowing down so she speeds up and gets in the left lane in front of me.

At this time we are still only traveling about 72 miles an hour and she may have gotten up to 75 mph at the most. I don't slow down (I am usually doing the speed limit or 2 over) or jump in the right lane just because I see a state trooper unless he's moving or needs me to switch lanes.

So she is in the left lane, I am in the left lane she passes him about 75-77 and I am going 70-72 when we pass by him in the middle. I was wondering to myself "I wonder is this going to be a story that I end up talking about at the truck stop". Never thinking at the time that it would make the 1st article on a web page actually titled Crazy Trucker Stories ;-) I looked back in the mirror a couple of times, never did turn the CB on to see if the drivers were chatting about the bear pulling out because I didn't want to miss the NPR radio program talking about Iraq. Twice I looked back still running seventy not yet having reached the bottom of the hill but in view of the 65mph sign up ahead. The lady was almost at the sign but never slow down.

I began to slow down as I approached the sign. When I looked back again sure enough here comes old smokey bear When I reached the 65mph sign I was doing 65. Up ahead there was the next sign saying speed limit was 60. Now I am still in the left lane, remember these guys know its a bear on the road so they are riding the brakes and won't go the speed limit that's why I stayed in the left lane.

Smokey the bear was gaining on me slightly I figured he was waiting to see if I was going to slow down at the 60 mph sign. As I approached the sign of course I was blocked out of the right lane because sometimes my fellow drivers don't like to be passed so they do the same thing that the four wheeler will do.

I saw his pattern while I was gaining on him in the left lane.The entire time he rode under the speed limit (because of the bear I guess) when I got beside him he wanted to speed up. So I got of the pedal, then he got off the pedal so I got back on the pedal.

I stayed in the left lane until reaching the sign before I finally got in front of the guy in the right lane. When I reached the sign I was still going 65 until I got in the right lane then I dropped down a bit. Looking back in my mirror I see smokey bear done gased on it, (he was hauling. . .)

I thought to myself, don't tell me this clown is going to come up here and give me a ticket for going 65 in a 60. Then being positive minded guy that I am I said, "naaah he probably just got a call somewhere".

Next thing I know he's on my back door with the lights a flashing. I said yep here comes the crazy trucker story. He comes to the passenger site door and I rolled the window down as he climbed up on the step. I was looking for my medical card when Iheard him in a distressed uneasy voice struggling to say, "open this door", he had stumble off the step. (I laughed to myself) For some reason I said ,"huh" (I think I was surprised at the tone in his voice. He acted like I had pushed him off the step). He said again tapping on the door,"open this door". I unlocked the door.

He climbed up in the truck asking for my license and registration while I was handing it to him. He then asked for my medical card i said,"Yes sir, I am looking for that now." I said what did you pull me over?", he said, "You were going 80 in a 70 back there halfway down that hill", I said no sir I wasn't going 80 back there, I never drive 80 my truck won't go 80 and I wouldn't do it if it did because I don't want to be one of the drivers that ride up and down the highway complaining and about the company that they drive for instead of changing companies but they can't change companies because of their driving record. That's why I wasn't going 80 mile an hour back there. He said," So are you saying that I am lying", I said no sir, I haven't seen what the reading says on your radar gun, it may very well say 80 but I am saying that it wasn't me that was going 80." He said where is your medical card." I said yes sir I am looking for it. (Which was ridiculous of me not to be able to immediately put my hands on my medical card."

He said,"Do you have any weapons, drugs or alcohol in the vehicle."

Me - "No, Sir"

Him - "Do you mind if I search the vehicle?"

Me - "No sir do what ever you feel like you need to do to fulfill you obligations for your job if that's the reason that your doing it"

He said - "You said you don't mind if I search your truck?"

I said - "Officer if that's what you feel like you need to be doing to fulfill the obligations of your job I have no problem with it.If you wanted to search it for any other reason I would have a problem with it from a principle standpoint but I still wouldn't deny you consent to search. I would just like to get this all over with and get back down the road."

I was handing him my medical card.

He said, "Where your medical card"

At this point the guy was kind of frustrating me, but of course I didn't show it

He said - "Why were you going 80 in a 70 back there?"

I said - "Officer, I already told you, I wasn't going 70 in an 80 back there." I said, I saw all of the people in front of me hitting their brakes when they got to the clearing where you were in the middle so I figured you were there before I saw you"

I Said "I was wondering if you were going to come out after me cause I was in the left lane so I got the ladies license plate number that was in front of me when I went by so that I can get in contact with her if I am given a ticket cause she was going faster than I was but she couldn't have been going 80mph either.

He gave me a funny look and said, "I'll be back in just a minute"

He went back to the car and ran my license. Ten minutes later he came back with his clip board filling out a form. I thought I was finally gonna get use of my TVC motorclub membership. (They will handle your traffic citations and discrepancies.)

He said, "I am gonna just write you up like for an inspection. I'll do a class III walk around so you won't get a ticket and get in trouble with your company."

I said, "Officer I appreciate it but had you given me the ticket I wouldn't be in trouble with the company because they know me and how I talk about trying to keep a clean record to other drivers. Going 80mph in my opinion for a person who livelihood is dependent on his drivers license and driving record is stupid and I am not stupid.

Having said that I do realize that you could have given me the ticket if you wanted to so again, I do appreciate you not doing that."

I kinda regretted saying all that immediately after I said it. Thinking it just might make him want to go ahead and give me the ticket. But the guy just walked off and around the truck to do the little inspection.

He came back with the form, asked me to sign it and we told each other to have a nice day.

So everything ended just fine other than a lot of wasted time.

After thought


In the officers defense, assuming that the radar actually said 80mph. You got to realize how common it is that the person they stop will say,"it wasn't me", or. "I wasn't going that fast", on and on.

So unless he's able to determine by your more detailed (but civil) reaction that it really is possible that you are not the guilty party. He's gonna make the assumption he got the right person.

Don't be one of the guys (whether you are right or wrong, driving your car or a big truck) that talks back to the officer ignorantly with a nasty attitude. Right or wrong the officer is in the leveraged position and most of them are actually trying to do his job.

They are not always right. But, they are also not always on a mission just to get you. The way you respond to his judgment call often will determine the outcome of the situation.


Oh yeah, and if it really was you, take the ticket and let it go.Suffer the consequences of your choices or get a lawyer or call TVC and stop being a cry baby cause you got caught!

All the things are meth.....

Apparently, there may be a bunch of drug testing kits being used by law enforcement on traffic stops, that say your grandma’s hat is an illegal substance.

This may be a slight exaggeration or flat-out filthy lie.


Neither of my grandmas were still wearing hats by the time I came along in the late 60s, but I distinctly remember watching the old ladies come out of church on Easter Sunday for the egg hunt, and thinking Marlin Perkins couldn’t find a better display of feathers and fluff. Their hats were magnificent, but I never saw anyone smoking or snorting one, and none of the sisters wearing them seemed overly energetic, so I have grave doubts about the validity of these drug kits.
I do go on, don’t I. Someone should check my hat for meth.

I wouldn’t take the opportunity to go on if yet another innocent person hadn’t been jailed for three days because he had a sock full of gel kitty litter in his car to reduce the fog on his windows, and it popped for meth in a field drug kit.

C’mon, y’all.


I have all the respect in the world for law enforcement, my very first job was as a filing clerk for the Houston County Sheriff’s Department in Warner Robins, Georgia. I learned more about the world than any teenage girl should know on that job. It prepared me for life pretty well and I’m still thankful to the Sheriff for letting me have it.

That being said, I know he’d have flipped his ever-loving lid if his deputies had made a press release without confirmation from the lab. I honestly think he’d have yelled someone to death over it. That’s basic stuff, and mistakes like that add to a poor public image law enforcement doesn’t need at all.

Both of these stories are kind of terrifying to me, as they probably are to anyone who has a truck full of everyday living items that could potentially send you to jail. The baking soda thing made me take all the baby powder out of my “emergency chafing” kit. You can go on and laugh, but I’m not pleasant when I’m chafing.

We don’t carry gel kitty litter, but I’ll think twice before buying PopRocks in bulk at the candy outlet, for sure. Does this mean I have to quit carrying gummi bears? Because that’s where I draw the line. I’d flip my ever-loving lid if we lost our truck over gummi bears.

I have the good fortune of being able to joke about it, but it ain’t no joke to the people it happens to. Good luck to Gale Griffin and Wendell Harvey. The best revenge is massive success, and we wish you that for sure.

If you’re carrying baking soda on the truck …



You might do well to keep it in the original container, if only to avoid it initially being mistaken for something illicit. If you get past that initial perception stage with a law enforcement officer, the baking soda may well test positive for cocaine …

Apparently, law enforcement around the country are using a very cheap ($2, reportedly) quick-ID kit to test substances for narcotics. The recent case of a military-haul team at Fort Chaffee, Ark., well illustrates the kit’s apparent penchant for false-positives. According to this story on KATV, truckers Gale Griffin and Wendell Harvey (a former police officer in Fort Wayne, Ind., himself) were pulled in for a routine inspection at the gates into Fort Chaffee, when personnel identified bags of white powder they suspected for cocaine. Turned out it was just baking soda, which Griffin buys in bulk given she uses the versatile substance “for everything,” she told the reporters.

Nonetheless, the quick-ID kits showed it tested positive for cocaine — multiple times. Griffin and Harvey then spent the better part of the summer (two months in total) in jail, losing their truck, their work and making for a difficult bounceback when, finally, more extensive tests were done and they were released. It took another couple months to get their truck back from Arkansas impound, too.


Around the country there have been instances of candy confused for meth, vitamins identified as amphetamines, and tortilla flour testing positive as cocaine. In Florida, the Department of Law Enforcement Lab Systems found 21 percent of the substances that tested positive for meth in the field gave a negative result in the crime lab.

12 Tips To Help Drivers Stay Awake Longer

Truck drivers have very long days and erratic sleep schedules. Most are also getting paid by how much work they get done, whether it be by the mile, by the hour, or a percentage of what the load pays. Staying awake and alert for long periods of time is critical if you want to be a safe, productive driver. Here are some things you can do to stay awake and alert for longer periods of time.

Avoid High Contrast Lights At Night


The stark contrast between the bright lights and pitch black will make your eyes feel sleepy before long. You have the bright headlights and dashboard lights in your face but you're sitting in a pitch black truck surrounded by pitch black night. That will wear you out. I used to drive with soft red lights to light the interior of the cab just a little at night. I also used to turn my dash lights down so they were just bright enough to see the gauges. And of course do your best to never look at the oncoming headlights but off to the side instead.

Keep Your Emotions In Check


Maybe you had a fight recently with your dispatcher. Maybe a car just cut you off a little while ago. Maybe you lost a great run. Whatever it is, you're p*ssed off now and you're brooding about it. All of that frustration is going to wear you out. Let it go.

Same goes with getting too excited about things. If you start singing at the top of your lungs because you were just assigned a great load you're going to be pulling into a great rest area before long to catch a nap. Try to keep your emotions on an even keel.

Don't Allow Yourself To Get Too Exhausted


If you keep pushing on when you're already tired you know you're doing something incredibly dangerous. You need sleep. But I've also noticed that if I wait until I'm exhausted to get some sleep I don't recover nearly as well as I do when I take more frequent naps or go to bed sooner. When you start feeling tired try to squeeze in a quick nap or go to bed early for the night. The more exhausted you are when you finally get some sleep the less alert you're going to feel when you get up.

Turn The Temperature Down


Nobody ever says, "I love the winter because I sleep better when I'm freezing cold." Heck no. We sleep best when we're warm and comfortable. I've found it's nice in the winter cranking up the cab temperature to about 80 just to get rid of the chill in my bones. But it also makes you sleepy. Turn down the temperature in the cab. Make it pretty cool, borderline chilly at times. That will keep you a little more alert.

Turn Off The Radios


Your CB radio, music, and talk shows can be highly entertaining, but also quite exhausting. Your mind is processing every sound it takes in. As you bombard your brain with stimuli you get more and more tired. Drive along for a while enjoying the soft hum of the engine and wheels going down the highway. You'll feel more calm and relaxed.

Turn Your Radio Back On!


Ok the quiet gets tiresome after a while also. The endless hum of the engine and tires is relaxing, but maybe it's putting you in a trance. Crank up some tunes, the CB radio, or a talk show for a short time and wake yourself up a little bit.

Avoid Large Doses Of Caffeine


I love coffee myself. I probably wouldn't die if I went a day without it, but who knows? I haven't tried in years. So sip on coffee if you like but watch out for caffeine overload. You start mixing different stimulants like coffee and energy drinks you're not only putting your health at risk but you're going to crash hard after a while. Go easy on the caffeine and stimulants.

Get A Cup Of Coffee!


I love coffee myself. I probably wouldn't.....oh yeah, I already told you. So go easy on the caffeine overall, but there's no denying that caffeine gives you a nice boost once in a while. It is certainly no replacement for sleep. I think we all know that by now. But it's a nice way to get a little pick-me-up when you'd like one.

Avoid Large Portions Of Food


Again, I think we've all experienced the Great Thanksgiving Crashfest where you look around 30 minutes after the meal and half of your family and friends are asleep or wishing they were. A full belly makes us sleepy. Eat a lot of smaller meals throughout the day instead of a few large ones. You'll feel better.

Get Something To Eat!


In the right amounts at the right time a snack or small meal can be a great energy booster. Overdo it and you'll be pulling off into a rest area for a nap. But the body responds well to small meals with small snacks in between.

Take A Walk Or Get Some Exercise


Yes those are two different things. Walking is not exercise, I don't care what anyone says. You need to get your heart and lungs pumping hard as a prerequisite for exercise. But you'd be amazed at how much of a difference a five minute walk into the truck stop or rest area can make. I rarely drove more than a few hours at a time. I liked getting out frequently, even if it was only for quick bottle of water.

Take A Nap


Ok so you don't feel like taking a walk. Then how about a thirty minute nap? Yeah I dig that idea myself. It's amazing what an incredible difference a short nap can make. One or two short naps each day can really help keep you awake and alert for a lot longer.

Let me be clear once again that there is no substitute for sleep. That's not what this was about. These are ways to keep your energy levels high and give yourself a little boost when you're not feeling as sharp as you'd like to.
